First, turn your air conditioner off and set the fan on your thermostat to "auto." This will allow your unit to thaw out faster (it takes 2-3 hours to fully thaw a system out). Check the filter. A dirty filter will not allow the air to flow through the unit properly and cause it to freeze up. If your filter is clean, the unit needs to be checked. There are several things that will cause an AC to freeze besides a dirty filter. Low refrigerant, a failing motor, or a dirty coil are among the possible reasons for the unit to freeze. The AC needs to be serviced or it will continue to freeze up.
