Should I Repair My Broken AC Compressor or Replace It?

compressor

Nobody wants to find that their home cooling system isn’t working, especially in the Texas heat. Our air conditioning systems work hard down here, and it’s not very comfortable without them. So, when you notice that your system isn’t cooling as well as it used to or you hear a hissing or humming noise that shouldn’t be there, you hope it’s a quick and inexpensive fix.

A faulty thermostat or a coolant leak might be relatively quick and affordable repairs, but a broken AC compressor can be a costly problem. In fact, it’s the most expensive part of your AC system.

Why Is the AC Compressor So Important?

The AC compressor is the most critical part of your cooling system. If it breaks down, it’s not the kind of repair you can wait on or cut corners on. Your AC unit may still turn on, and you may still hear the fans, but you won’t have cold air.

When your AC compressor breaks down, it may be possible to repair it. If not, you’ll need to replace it. Here are some things to consider:

  • How old is your system?
  • Is it still under warranty?
  • Has it broken down before?
  • How much will it cost to repair versus replace it?
  • Will you save more money by replacing an old system?
  • Do you want a more energy-efficient system?

If your system is relatively new, it may still be under warranty, and you would only pay for labor to replace it. Honestly, most compressors break down years after the warranty has expired. If it’s not under warranty, but still relatively new, it might be cost-effective to repair the compressor.

If you have an older system, or it’s given you trouble before, it might make more sense to replace your entire unit. An older unit won’t be as energy-efficient as new units, so a new energy-efficient unit may end up saving you more money in the long run. Lower energy bills put money back in your wallet.
